The
CRC Has done extensive research into the phenomenon
of "Christafarianism", resulting in the
publication of two (free) books, numerous articles
and a huge archive of research material. In this

CHRISTAFARI ON
YABBY YOU - 2001
FROM THE CRC
ARCHIVE ON CHRISTAFARIANISM |
"The
Yabby You issue is a mystery to me also, and
I have received numerous e-mails regarding
the man otherwise know as Vivian Jackson.
Regrettably I can't truly give you a
complete answer until I have had a chance to
speak with him personally. If I was in a
room with him and was only allowed three
questions, I would ask: "Who is Christ
to you?" "Who is Selassie to
you?" and: "Do you smoke
ganja?" How he answered those questions
would determine whether or no I would label
him a "gospel artist" and add him
to our webstore. While the Jamaican Rasta
contigent may call him a Christian, or
"Jesus Dread", they are notorious
for mislabeling individuals.
I do have his album "Jesus Dread"
and it is very good. I don't think there is
anything lyrically offensive on it. The only
other concern that I have is the company
that he keeps. While some may applaud his
regular interaction with known Rastas and
consider them as great witnessing
opportunities, some of our fans may not
agree with his recordings with non-Christian
artists like: Michael Rose (Black Uhuru),
King Jammy, King Tubby, Tommy Mc Cook,
Dillinger, Errol Alphonso, Wayne Wade, Tappa
Zukie, Augustus Pablo, and Lee Scratch Perry
to name a few.
Again, since I have only one album by Vivian
Jackson (aka Yabby You), I am by no means an
authority on the individual. However, I do
know that some of our fans that have sworn
to a strict christian music diet, may not
feel comfortable listening to an album that
is packed full of contributions from
primarily secular artists. I guess that the
real question is: "What makes an ablum
Christian?" This riddle is doomed to be
answered by various believers in different
ways. Is it just the lyrics? - There are
plenty of nonbelievers recording gospel
songs these days. Is it just the heart? -
There is a whole heap of artists singing
secular music that claim to be Christian. Is
it just the producer or song writer? - There
are many Yabby You songs in which his
credits are limited to writer and/or
producer and the musical/vocal performance
is given by Rastas. Or does every singer and
player of instrument of an album have
to be a Christian? If this is the case, then
I would eliminate Yabby from the Gospel
category. Until I hear directly from the
source (Yabby You) and give you a firm
answer, this will have to be an issue that
is decided in the discerning heart of each
believer that listens to his recordings.
Although I admittedly do not know his heart
or intentions, my best guess is that his
ultimate goal was not to be in the gospel
section at your local record store. When he
started recording decades ago, there was no
gospel reggae genre. He had to work within
the confines of a secular industry. I am
sure that it was his aim to share his
convictionsand shed some light within the
Rasta reggae community, using it's singers,
producers, and players of instruments. What
is the fruit of this? Only God knows.
Overall, I would suggest that you pray for
him and may God give you wisdom in your
final decisino.
Blessings In Christ,
Mark Mohr
Christafari/Lion Of Zion"
