Joe Gibbs was born in 1943 in Montego Bay,
Jamaica. After a stay in the USA, he went back to
work in Jamaica's recording industry and was there
when Ska became Rocksteady became Reggae.
He's responsible for Althea and Donna's Uptown
Top Ranking, one of the first Reggae Hits in the
UK. He's also behind Culture's massive album Two
Sevens Clash, and June Lodge's 1980's hit
"Someone Loves You Honey". The last
release, though, cause him to go out of business
for a while because of law suits.
This JOE GIBBS SPECIAL gives a nice overview of
his work, until the man's carrier ended so
abruptly.
The mix doesn't carry any of the obvious
titles, which makes it kind of crucial as we hear
some crucial 70's Rockers Reggae. It does carry
eight great vocals and, not deniable, eight DUB
and DJ tracks wherein the true power of Joe Gibbs
productions become unmistakably clear.
A welcome addition!
